Chapter 1:

Whispers in the Dark

It was a cold, stormy night when the encounter occurred. Rain beat down on the city like a never ending waterfall, and the people of New York raced to wherever they could find shelter from the unrelenting shower. It was on this night that Dylan walked the streets, no specific destination in mind, and no care of being soaked from head to toe. He wore a water-logged version of his usual outfit; consisting of a black trench coat, dark blue t-shirt, black jeans, and a circa-1600s, black conical hat. He wore the hat and an angle that covered his eyes, he wore a brown belt with a silver chain hanging from his left side and sheathed to each of his thighs were twin daggers with metallic handles, and on each hand he wore a ring that belong to either his mother or father.

Dylan roamed the blackened streets without a purpose or destination, drifting from town to town, city to city, with one real goal in mind. Most people think that goal, seeing as Dylan is 19 years old and a mutant, is to try and use his abilities to enslave mankind, others think that he is trying to protect the world. However, Dylan will neither confirm nor deny either of these assumptions because he realizes that people, no matter what they are told, will never change their opinions about someone.

So, Dylan walks a line that is somewhere in the middle; a no man’s land of the hero and villain spectrum.

“Nothing in this city ever changes.” He muttered to himself boredly and then whipped his head up to the sound of a nearby explosion.

“Get out of my way, punk!” a girl snapped at him and ran past him without a backwards glance. Dylan stood there with a confused look on his face.

‘Follow her………Chase her down………’ he heard a voice say in an almost inaudible whisper.

But Dylan just stood there, not sure of what was going on. After a minute or two of almost complete silence, the rain still pouring down, Dylan shook his head and sighed again.

“Another day,” He muttered and then his body flickered away, vanishing into the shadows, into the night.

Dylan’s eyes widened as he stared at the bottle of whiskey in his hand and he remembered that night a week ago. The voices in his head had been repeating the same line since that girl had shoved him aside in her sprint, away from the explosion. Some days he would almost regret not listening to them, but he brushes the feeling aside because he doesn’t understand why he would start to regret the decision. He sighs and takes another drink of the alcohol in his hand and that was the first time he took notice of the quiet in the bar. He turned his head to the front door and noticed two people glaring at him.

One was an abnormally tall man with rippling muscles and green skin. He was bald and he had the look of a runaway freight train that is waiting to be pointed in a certain direction. The other was a lot shorter and covered in thick, dark fur. He was a literal ape and it was obvious that this monkey was angry.

Dylan smirked a bit and asked, “Didn’t I put you two in jail a week ago?”

The green man grunted in response and the monkey said, “We got out early. On ‘good behavior.’” He then started to laugh.

“Guess coming to Toronto didn’t slow you two down. Well…looks like I got to dirty my hands again.” Dylan said unenthusiastically, as he stood up and pulled out the twin daggers strapped to his thigh. He spun the knives in his hands and popped his neck. “All right, Gorilla Groad, Abomination, let’s get this over with already.” He muttered.

Abomination snarled again and charged at Dylan, rage filled his eyes and all the monster could think of was crushing the guy standing in his path. The only thing he hit, however, was a wall; Dylan, having vanished into the shadows, reappeared and yawned out of boredom at how dumb Abomination was. He shrugged as the big, green oaf got up off the ground and then turned to a Gorilla’s fist nailing him in the jaw and sending him through the hole in the wall that Abomination had created. Abomination took the advantage and charged at Dylan again.

However, the huge, green, rage-machine was stopped dead in his tracks as shadows cocooned his large body and lifted him into the air. Dylan did the same to Gorilla Groad, and, after a few seconds of struggling, both the villains stopped all movement when they felt the cold steel of Dylan’s daggers threatening to pierce their hearts.

Dylan shrugged and said, “Are you two do-,” he was cut off by the sound of a gun going off and his shoulder suddenly flaring in pain. He dropped to the ground and stiffled a scream ‘What the hell?!’ he thought as he looked around, frantically trying to find the person whom put a bullet in his shoulder. Suddenly he remembered the two villains he had in his thrawl and quickly dragged them down into a shadow portal. Once they were gone he sheathed his daggers and looked around one last time. When he saw nothing he flickered away…

‘Bang!!’

“Damn. Well you live for now, Dylan Blackwood. But you’ll die soon enough. I promise that.” The assassin muttered as the target got away….

Chapter 2:

The Assignment

“Kurt, have I ever told you how boring this gets?” Tristan asked as he dodged another wrecking ball.
“I’m sure you’ve mentioned it once or twice.” Nightcrawler answered as he vanished and reappeared next to the electro kinetic he was training with. The two had talked about it yesterday and decided to get some training in done in the Danger Room before Tristan had to go to class today. Tristan drew his sword and the blade came to life as electric currents flowed though the conductive, deadly metal; he was sweating from all the bobbing and weaving he had done through the obstacle course and it had come time for the fighting portion of the training. A large, metal door parted in opposite directions and several large robots walked through the passage way, into the room. They set their sensors on the two mutants and lifted their arms, beginning to fire lasers at Tristan and Kurt.
Artemis, a friend to Tristan, walked up to the window of the observation bay and watched as Tristan and Nightcrawler completed their training. She smirked as Shock, a nickname she came up with for Tristan, drove his lightning sword into one of the robots’ head and then fired off some lightning bolts at another two. It took a few minutes, but the two did manage to finish and Artie laughed a bit at how long they took to get done.
She smirked as she pressed a button and then said, “What took you two so long, huh?”
“Hey, at least we finished! Cut us some slack here, Artie!” Tristan said in response and then laughed.
“I would, but you’re late for class, Tristan. The Professor sent me to find your sorry a**.” Artemis said to him.
Tristan suddenly grew a stupid look and then slapped himself in the face. “Ah hell! How could I be so stupid?” He asked himself as he literally bolted out of the Danger room. He rounded corner after corner and went through corridors like a mad man on the run from the cops, avoiding as many people as humanly…or mutantly…possible. After a few more minutes of his death run, Tristan skidded to a stop in front of the door that lead to Professor Xavier’s class room. As he started to enter, a water whip hit him in the back of the head and Artemis walked up to him with a smirk on her face. Tristan gave her an annoyed look that Artie shrugged off and then smirked about.
The two walked into class and instantly all eyes fell on them. Some of the kids in the class snickered, rumors instantly tumbling through their minds. Others just ignored them and went back to their books or other work.
The Professor, on the other hand, gave a light smile and spoke to them.
“Glad you could finally join us, Tristan.” He said.
“Sorry, Professor. I’ll try be on time tomorrow.” He said as he took his seat, smiling at his other friend, Sirena, along the way.
“Maybe you should wait till lunch hour to use the Danger Room for some personal practice.” Charles responded calmly to him and then continued the lesson he had started today.
Artemis walked over to her seat and the lesson carried on as if nothing had changed.
Tristan did his best to pay attention to what was being said, but it got boring too quickly. Really he was writing notes and stuff, but he never was one for sitting still and paying attention to something boring for long periods of time. He glanced back at Sirena and smirked a bit at her. Tristan had run into Sirena a while ago and had brought her to the mansion after her telepathy caused her mind to be over run with wandering thoughts. They bonded and became good friends very quickly, but Sirena saw something in Tristan that made her happy and she trusted him with her life. A rare feat because Sirena didn’t trust people easily, still doesn’t actually. Not even very many people in the school have earned the kinda trust that Tristan has earned. Mostly Artie, The Professor, and oddly enough Wolverine are the only others that have gotten that much trust from Sirena. Tristan had asked Sirena why Wolverine was on that list of people, her responding that there was something familiar about Logan.
The bell for class to end rang and Tristan started to pack his things and head out with Sirena and Artemis.
“Tristan, you, Artemis, and Sirena stay. I need to speak with you three.” The Professor stated and the rest of the class gave them that annoying, your-in-trouble-now look. The three looked between each other and Sirena asked them, using her telepathic abilities, ‘What do you think this is about?’
Tristan shrugged and finished packing his supplies. Artemis and Sirena did the same and once everyone was gone they stood before the wheelchair-bound telepath.
“What is it, Professor?” Artemis asked him instantly, not wanting to waste time.
“Cerebro has detected a mutant in Canada. A very powerful one. I need you three to go there and find him before something happens to him. Namely Magneto taking him Genosha.” The Professor explained.
The three of them had silently looks of dismay at what they were told. The last powerful mutant that had been found was Sirena, her having Geo-, Pyro-, Aero-, and Hydro-kinetic abilities and being a telepath, and she was found only a few weeks ago at the most.
“Him? You know who he is?” Tristan asked the founder of this school.
“No.” The Professor stated and waved them off.
Tristan got a suspicious look but didn’t press the man for questions. He nodded and then walked out of the class, followed by the girls.
“Professor Xavier knows something and he isn’t telling us it.” Tristan said after a few seconds of silent walking.
Artemis and Sirena both gave Tristan mixed glances but it was Artemis who had the looks that seemed to agree with Tristan’s assumption.
Sirena, on the other hand, expressed her disbelief very quickly. “Why would he keep something from us, Tristan?” Sirena asked.
“What ever it is, we’ll find out in Canada…hey maybe we can stop by my old house and see how mom is doing.” Artemis answered and then smiled at the thought of possibly seeing Illiane again. It’s been months since that whole problem at Emma Frost’s school happened.
Tristan continued walking as if nothing had been said while Sirena merely sighed and nodded at Artemis. The three continued along their way trying not to waste anytime after that.
Sirena purposefully walked closer to Tristan then Artemis, whom smiled at her. Tristan didn’t think anything of and continued walking. Way to go Tristan…just keep on proving the stereotype that boys are completely dumb and hopeless. Artemis frowned at this and mentally slapped the electro kinetic upside his black-haired, head. Artemis knew that Tristan was an ok guy and a good friend…but sometimes he was just completely dumb to the world around him. She could tell that Sirena liked him, a lot, but she lost hope in Tristan noticing on his own. The only reason she hadn’t told him that Sirena had a crush on him was because Sirena had begged her not to tell, fearing of dieing due to embarrassment. So, Artie left Tristan to find out for himself….who knew how long that would take.
The three soon entered the Hangar bay, where the Blackbird awaited to them. A plane that was just a bit bigger and faster then a fighter jet, Tristan would call the Blackbird a Fighter Planes’ older brother, the Blackbird was what the X-Men mainly used when they were on call and heading out to stop one disaster after another.
“You still scared of flying, Artie?” Tristan asked with a smirk. He took a seat in the pilot’s chair and started up the jet.
“Yes, Shock. And I still get nauseous at the sight of blood, so let’s just get this over with without a fight, Please?” Artemis asked as she took a seat and buckled up. She shut her eyes and practically crushed the arm rest as she tried not to freak out.
Sirena sat next to Artemis and held her hand, supportively as she smiled and nodded at Tristan to get this thing in the air. Tristan nodded back in response, then opened the Hangar Doors, and started up the Blackbird. After a few seconds they trio were in the air and zooming away…Artemis…may or may not have barfed a bit in her mouth.
“Next stop; Toronto, Canada.” Tristan said as he piloted the Blackbird into the afternoon sky.
It was dark when the three arrived in Toronto. Artemis and Sirena had passed out hours ago and Tristan was on the verge of passing out himself..staying awake by jolting himself every now and then. The tired mutant breathed a sigh as he landed the Blackbird in the woods not far from where Professor X had said he felt the target mutant’s powers. The silence of the engines somehow awoke Sirena, whom rubbed her eyes and looked around.
“Tristan?” She asked.
“We’re here. Go back to sleep, Sirena.” Tristan told her as he walked over and sat down beside her and Artemis.
“But, we have a mission to finish.” She barely protested.
“It’s late. We’re all tired, and then mission doesn’t have to be finished immediately. We can wait till tomorrow to finish this.” He told her with a sleepy smile.
“Ok then.” She said gave Tristan a light hug before resting her head on his shoulder and falling asleep again.
Tristan wondered what the hug was about..but he didn’t dwell on the thought as he passed out soon after Sirena did.

-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-

The night air was extremely cold and Dylan had no sense of direction in the darkness. He couldn’t see a thing and was freezing to death in the Canadian Wilderness. His shoulder had stopped bleeding hours ago, but he was still in pain and his coat and t-shirt were stained with the thick, red, liquid that ran through his veins. The poor man wandered the snow-covered ground trying to find shelter for the night. Dylan walked blindly for what felt like hours until he, luckily, bumped into a wall. He stepped back and shook his head. After a few moments he realized that it was a barn made of tin. He vanished and reappeared inside the building to find a heater that was set up to keep the animals, which were shocked by Dylan appearing in their home, warm. Dylan quickly ducked down beside the heater and relaxed as he warmed up instantly. He sighed silently and eventually passed out…..
