Need for Speed

Post by TheAdventurer on 1/26/2015, 2:50 pm

Felix walked down the streets of Manhattan, laughing inwardly at the snail's pace the cars were moving in the clogged traffic. He moved through the crowd quickly, slipping through any openings that he could see and shoving people out of the way when no openings were to be found. There was nothing more annoying to him then slow people, and no one moved slower than when they were in a crowd. It was like they were all cattle, slowly being carried away to their destination by the gradual flow of their fellow herd members. It sickened him.

He soon found himself wishing he hadn't come into the city today and he fled to streets into the first door he found. He was relieved when he left the flow of human cattle and entered a store, breathing in the recycled air and enjoying it now that he was out of the crowds. Luckily for him the shop wasn't particularly busy that day, only a few customers milling around the store. He looked around and realized that he was in an Apple store, various electronic gizmos displayed for people to play on and gawk at. Felix didn't have much use for such things, but one of the items still drew his eye.

He had heard of the new IPhones and he knew that a few of the richer campers had one, but he hadn't actually seen one up close. The device didn't look particularly fancy, but Felix decided that he wanted it. He didn't really know why he wanted it, but if he wanted it he didn't see any reason why he couldn't have it. He quickly snatched at the nearest phone and pocketed it, the motion too fast for anyone else in the room to see.

Lee was casually strolling around the AppleStore, looking at the devices. iPads, iPhones, iMacs, all these things she could never afford with her current bank account. Well, her mother's bank account. You get what she's saying. Lee had been raised in a remote rez all the way in the deepest depths of South Dakota, between a shabby boarding school and an even shabbier family house. Right now she was having a brief stay at one of her aunts's who had a tiny flat in Chinatown, before going to Camp Half-Blood -- last time she had been here, she had stumbled across Elijah, gone with him to an amusement park and got attacked in a scare house by a bunch of empousai.
The wiry fourteen years old was dressed in a loose red tank top -- lose enough to show a bit of her white bra underneath, on the sides -- with ripped denims shorts and a NY snapback on her short black hair. Damn, she wanted everything here. All she had was this one laptop she had stolen from a guy on her last winter holidays. Sure, it was neat and everything, but if she wanted to do some proper hacking, she'd need more. Ohhh fancy that MacBook Air over there.... In a perfectly natural way, she grabbed a box from underneath the wooden display shelf and slid it inside her satchel, but so quickly nobody could ever see that. Her hand had been a blur.

Felix turned away from his theft and spotted someone else snatching something for herself, a girl whose hands moved far too fast for an ordinary person. Before Felix could go and question the girl however, a man clasped his hand around Felix's shoulder and turned him around. "You're pretty good," the man, one of the employees, told him. "But no matter how good you are at sneaking something, anyone watching will still notice the suddenly missing item."

Still holding tightly to Felix's shoulder the man turned and looked at the girl, smiling confidently. "Don't think I didn't see you snatching that MacBook either little lady. Maybe on a busy day you two could have gotten away with it, but a slow day like today isn't a good day to try taking things out from under our noses." He raised his voice, alerting the other employees.

"Sammy, take the merchandise back from the girl. Bobby, call the police. Tell them we caught ourselves a couple of sneak thieves."

Felix was frozen, not knowing what to do. The guy who had caught him held his shoulder in a death grip, so even if he bolted he probably wouldn't do much other than fall on his face. He glanced at the girl, wondering if she would make a break for it.

A strong hand hooked itself into the crook of her elbow and dragged her away, customers staring. Another guy took her satchel from her and retrieved the MacBook from it. Dammit. She was more squeamish about the cops though; she had been dragged to the police station of her town several times for thievery stuff and generally didn't have a good memory of those moments.

They got dragged away into a remote room where a security team cuffed them to a metal bar. Lee analyzed the situation. The security cameras had probably gotten her face but she could still make a run for it. There were what, four security guys in here. For someone who fought mythological monsters for a living, it was a piece of cake. They have guns. Okay maybe not that much of a piece of cake, but it was worth a shot.

"Name, address," a guy said, sitting in front of them.

"Clary Chavarria, 416 Platinum Trail, Rochester," Lee made up on the spot in a defeated voice. She really sounded like someone who was accepting her fate. Her mind was racing though: her handcuffs were no problem, she could at least try to knock the four guys down; then she'd need to sprint out -- main entrance? She didn't know if there even was a staff exit here so yeah, main entrance. She'd probably free the other guy too so it'd take attention from her... And then she'd just make a run for it. Manhattan was crowded, she was tiny and quick, she could easily sneak away.

Felix was not liking this situation one bit. First he somehow got caught doing his thing, then he ended up stuck in this place with a security guard and the loser who was probably the reason he got caught. There was no way the guy would have noticed the missing phone if the much larger MacBook hadn't been stolen first. It had to be her fault. He was too fast to be caught.

When the man asked their names and addresses Felix smirked and replied, "My name is President Smartmouth and I live at none of your business, Kiss My Butt Road." He probably shouldn't have antagonized the guard, but he was in no mood to play nice. He thought about his possibilities for escape and quietly began to work on his handcuffs, quickly unlocking them without letting the guard notice. If he was going to make it out of there he would have to make a dash for the exit before the cops arrived. Fast as he was, he wasn't likely to outrun a cop car without some serious supernatural help.

Lee smothered a snicker. The guy had guts and a nice sense of humor. But then she heard the distant noise of a police car siren -- sure it could be something totally different but she couldn't afford to play sloppy on this. She ordered her handcuffs to unlock silently, still doing her best to look like the pathetic defeated little girl she had been passing herself off as.
Then she jumped up, lashing out with the handcuffs as hard as she could. The cold metal hit the first security guy in the back of the head with a loud thump, having him collapse to the ground. The others immediately reacted, one grabbing her arm, the other one readying a threatening fist, the fourth guy taking out his gun. Lee couldn't afford to wait. Sending her heel into the crotch of the guy who held her arm, she ducked away under the fist which hit the other one in the chest, speed making a sudden surge in her muscles as she turned into a blur and "reappeared" in front the guy with the gun, sending her foot up between his legs and ripping the revolver from his hands. Not waiting for him to put his hands on his head, she slammed the barrel in his temple. Briefly knocked out, the guy collapsed, a streak of blood on his forehead. But the others were still there.

Lee pointed the gun at the standing guy, clicking the safety off. "Give me your keys," she told him. Reluctantly, the man took his keys from his belt and tossed them to her; she caught them with one hand. "Now cuff yourself." She threw her cuffs over to him and watched him cuff himself to the metal bar. "You... Wait a second. How did you de-cuff yourself?" she asked the other thief then shook her head, ADHD racing through her system. "Never mind. Let's get outta here."

When he heard the sirens Felix prepared to act, only to be surprised when his companion blurred into action. He had thought that he was the only one that could move like that. Then she spoke to him and he snapped out of it, his eyes focusing on her. "Alright then," he told her with a grin. "Try to keep up."

With that he bolted off, dashing out the doors and running off into the streets.

(Sorry for the late reply. I've had a really hectic last two days.)

Lee sprinted out after him, clicking the safety back on and pocketing the gun before stopping at the first security camera. "I need four seconds, you go."

Hacking into the security camera, one second. Accessing the files, the recorded data, another second. Deleting, another second. Disconnecting the cameras... processing, processing -- Go! Lee darted between the customers, rolling between feet and ducking between people, grabbing a MacBook Air and the latest iPhone on the way because if she was actually getting chased, it had to be worth it.

Soon she was out too but went in the opposite direction of the guy, running at top speed in the New York streets -- two people were more difficult to hunt down when they were apart, the police had to dispatch one car to each of them and good luck finding Lee in the New York crowds.
The good thing about this city was the variety of streets: big populated streets, tiny paths, curves and turns and unexpected garbage cans. Lee slalomed there, using what she had learned of parkour over the years to get out of people's way and still be overseen.

Until she ran into some other fast guy --"Watch it-- whoa, you again?" she asked, looking at the other thief from the Apple Store. They were in a crowded street close to Central Park and they had to disappear like, right now. She could already hear the wailing of sirens a block behind them. "Come on!" She grabbed his wrist and took the first street to the right, heading back in the maze of Manhattan.

Felix was disappointed when the girl held back. He had never really had any competition in the foot speed department ever since he had gotten his abilities. He had been looking forward to a little race. But he kept running, not willing to get caught by the cops for the sake of a race.

He ran through the streets, cursing the mass of sheeple as he barreled through them. He could hear the sirens of the cop cars behind him, urging him to go faster while the people in front of him forced him to go slower. He took turns down back alleys to get away from them, blasting through any unoccupied streets he could find. Finally he caught sight of Central Park, breathing out a sigh of relief at the mass of trees that could provide him a hiding spot.

Just then he slammed into someone else and saw that it was the same girl as before. "How did you-" she grabbed his hand and he was yanked behind her, following her through the streets. "How are you able to move like that?" he demanded. "I thought I was the only one besides my dad who could do that kind of stuff."

"Who's your dad, Barry Allen?"

She kept dashing across the New York crowd but the police cars were right behind them. Lee crossed the street and almost ran into a bike messenger guy, jumping out of the way at the last second.
Bikes... Hmmm...

OOC: Sorry for the short post, I'm packing, I'm typing up something better once I'm in France.

"Very funny, nerd girl," Felix muttered. "Besides, if my dad was the Flash I doubt I would have trouble outrunning cars. Felix raced after her and jumped onto the roof of a car and over the biker, landing in a run and slowly moving ahead of her. "Not that you'd believe me, but my dad just so happens to be a god."

"Yeah yeah of c-- wait what?"

He had said that with absolute seriousness and somewhere, she knew he wasn't lying. Another demigod? Her breath hacked, she kept running, hearing the sirens behind them wailing louder. They were gaining on them -- well of course. They were in cars, and they were on foot.
Then Lee saw two bike messengers stop a couple of yards in front of them, stepping off their bikes and going into a building. That was the moment. I'm gonna shred the living hell out of that thing.
Making a run for it, she went to the bikes, picking the locks with a touch. The chains clicked open and Lee passed one around her waist like the messenger people did and swung herself onto the bike.
Now fleeing from police cars on a bike may sound as pathetic as fleeing from them by running but bikes were smaller and easier to drive than cars. She needed a bike to get out of the big Manhattan traffic after which she could hijack a cab (she still had her gun) and drive back to Camp Half-Blood. And the other guy too if he proved to be a real demigod, like her.

"We'll discuss our demigod-ish-ness later, grab the bike and follow me!"

With that she crossed the road, slaloming between the cars and passing back right in front of the police cars, in the opposite direction. Suddenly a truck showed up in front of her and she had to take a sharp turn, her back wheel slamming forward; fortunately she quickly regained her momentum and went back on the road, her legs making the bike go faster and faster.
