When you watch the Hunger Games you don't know whether to cry or stare blankly at the screen. People you know and people you don't fight to the death. They all promised at least one person they would come back, but only one does.
DISTRICT 11
Waking up in the morning is a hard task nowadays you wish you could just wither away. We have just enough food to make it possibly during the week. I was getting desperate. I knew that we were not allowed to take home the food that we harvested; I learned that the hard way. I was waiting trying not to sign up for tessera but I knew I would have to. I slowly rolled out of bed jumping over my brother whom slept on the floor. I opened the door slowly hoping to move out of the way before it hit the spot where it flew open. I of course missed my chance to move and stubbed my toe, apparently badly because I could feel warm blood soaking my sock. I limped out the door shutting it behind me. Once I was out of the view of the house I took off me boot and sock to find half my nail gone. I sighed and slipped the sock back on and flinched when I put my boot on. We were off school it was harvest again. I walked across the district to the fields seeing most the people in there already. I try to keep my head low and sneak in because was late I but Baize saw me.
“Kayla.” He says simply looking down at me.
I give him a weak smile. “Good Morning” I say curtly and try to slide past him. He sticks his arm out to block me.
“You’re late, again.” He tells me.
“Oh? Am I? I am so sorry” I say and again try to go past him.
“You bring me a gallon of strawberries, and I don’t mention a word to the mayor.” He hisses and lets me past.
“Deal” I mutter back and walk past him and run across the fields until I see Carter a smile spreads across my face.
He says that when I smile the world stops and watches I always roll my eyes and laugh it off. I don’t like Carter like that and I don’t want to, at least I don’t think so.
“One of these days you are going to end up back on that stage getting punished” He tells me worried then hands me a basket. I begin to pick strawberries off the bush.
“Baize is easy enough to bribe” I tell him
“What if we get a new guard? Then what Kayla, you can’t be late every day.” He retorts
“I am not late every day.” I explain.
“Four days this week, Kayla! Maybe I should get a new harvest partner one that understands what’s going on around them.” He snitches at me.
Ouch, that hurt. I stay silent and finish picking a good amount of strawberries off the bush. I hear him sigh.
“I’m sorry, that was rude.” He says once he is next to me.
“It’s fine, I know how stressed you are. Is Mia and Zack both turning twelve?” I asked quietly
He nods. I wish I could hug him but that would be so awkward. At age twelve you are eligible for the hunger games although your name is only in once when you are twelve it is nerve wrecking to think that the unthinkable might happen. After 5 hours of being in the hot, muggy, gross fields we are finally allowed to leave. I walk out with Carter in silence I give Baize a bag of strawberries, and slide out past him. He watched us leave.
“Good luck tomorrow” He tells us with real sincerity in his voice gives me a small smile. As we walk away I speak up.
“Carter the odds are in their favor” I say before we stop by his house.
“I know” He says as we stop in front of his home. He hugs me awkwardly “See you tomorrow” He says simply and walks away~
