Ice Skating

Alice walked in with Kataro, her skates in one hand. She guessed at Kataro's shoe size and tossed some ice skates at him.

I sit down and put my skates on. When I get up I fall to the ground. "Ow."

I laugh again and extend a hand to help him up. "You're going to fall down a lot. But, you know, practice makes perfect." To demonstrate, I slip on my skates and do a couple of twirls.

I stand up and balance myself. I wobble over to the ice and start sliding without trying to. I wave my arms to try to keep my balance. I fall and get up. The process repeats about ten times.

I suppress a laugh and swiftly skate over to Kataro. I offer my gloved hand.

I take Alice's hand, still trying to keep steady.

"See, you can't lift your feet like walking. You kind of have to slide." I try to explain, slowly skating forward, showing him how.

I try following her slowly. "Is there a way to stop?"

"You drag one skate behind the other, kinda turning it sideways. Like this." I let go of his hand. I skate around the edge of the lake quickly, then execute the stopping technique in front of him.

I try to stop but I just fall again. I get frustrated and suddenly the ice melts beneath me and I fall in. The water around me steams as I tread water. "Every time!"

I squeak as I fall into the steaming water. My head goes under. My only thought is getting the heavy skates off as I start sinking.

I curse under my breath. I aim my hand towards Alice and tendrils shoot out of it. They wrap around her and pull her up. "Sorry."

I struggle with the tendrils and gasp for breath. "It's... fine... But... could you, ah, make some fire? I'm freezing..." My teeth are chattering as I hug myself, trying to keep warm.

"Yeah." I pull her and myself back onto the ice. I move over to the shore and melt some snow. I sit down and try to start a fire but it only flickers on my hand. "I'm too wet to start fire. I can raise my body heat though, if you don't mind snuggling up to me."

"At this p-point, I d-d-don't mind any th-thing." I curl up close to Kataro, shivering like crazy.

I raise my body heat high like a campfire. I pull her closer. "So that one guy that was at the mess hall is your boyfriend, right?"

I bite my lip, frowning. "I was under the impression that it was over... I don't know what he was thinking..." I muse, my shivering slowing down.

"Yeah.. the way you looked when he put his arm on you wasn't right." I warm myself up a bit more. "He's kind of a jerk. What happened with the relationship?"

"I suppose... it was never really serious to begin with, and I guess we... drifted apart." I sigh. "How's Belle?"

"I don't know. Last time I saw her, we went swimming and I got electrocuted. My hand touched the water and it shocked me. That's the near-death experience I told you about. That was like 25 days ago, though." I look down. "I miss her."

"Ah." I look down as well, pulling distractedly on a blonde curl. "Er. You're getting into a lot of those, aren't you? Near-death experiences?" I laugh, even though the sound is half hearted.

I laugh a little too, "Yeah. I guess my father is watching over me, for once. Otherwise I would've been toast by now. Literally."

"Mm. May I see your hand again?" I ask, trying to distract myself.

I take it and turn it over, tracing the circle where the LED lights appear. "How does it work?"
