hardcore salads for a hardcore person [private]

Post by Kendall on 6/7/2015, 1:58 pm

Lunchtime -- after a hard morning working in the infirmary, Nelly wasn't sure she was really up for... meat. Some kids had gotten some pretty nasty gashes today during training that even happened to disgust the daughter of Apollo, despite her five or six years' worth of experience. She'd seen some nasty stuff during the wars, but for some reason hearing those kids blubber got to her more today than the several battles she had participated in as a healer. Maybe it was just because she was tired, or 'cause she had spent all night awake because she'd sort of had a nightmare about said wars. Ugh.

Running a hand through her hair and sighing, Nelly stepped into the Mess Hall just a little before the lunch rush was going to begin; most of the tables were empty, with a few nymphs and kids milling about chatting idly because they'd skipped their scheduled activities or were on kitchen duty. Like most of the other kids there, Nelly was wearing the typical camp attire: the orange Camp Half Blood t-shirt and a pair of black cotton shorts, black Vans, her camp necklace. Not much of a fashionista, but still: she looked great and that was the first step to loving herself and damn right she was great. Taking a clean goblet from one of the tables, she sat down at the very end of the Apollo table all by her lonesome, leaning her head in her hand as she muttered to the goblet: "Baja Blast Mountain Dew, please." Immediately, it filled with the light green-blue soda, fizzy and probably warm since she hadn't specified she wanted ice, but Nelly didn't really care about the temperature. (She was one of those freaks who liked warm soda, believe it or not.)

Tapping the side of the goblet, she frowned intently down at the Apollo table's marble top. Maybe she should get something to eat. Or not. She didn't know. Did she want a turkey sandwich? Or... maybe a salad? A salad would be nice, yeah, but she was too lazy to get up. She sat there and weighed the consequences, now drumming her fingers on the tabletop as she thought to herself, soda for the moment abandoned as she sank further into her frankly very stupid thoughts. Salad... or no? How far is the salad bar anyway?

Andrew wasn't into hunting for survival, that whole situation was less than desirable. It was sort of odd, when you thought about it, at least to Andrew it was. Hunting for sport produced blood but hunting for survival produced golden dust. Of course, nobody in their right mind would pay for what this golden dust brought. Gold was shiny and valued at quite a pretty drachma. This dust, however, was simply the remains of a foul beast and the knowledge that it would one day come back. And if you were lucky, it wouldn't be for a long time. How comforting, Andrew thought.

Of course, hunting in the forests within Camp Half-Blood was never too dangerous. Sure, there were monsters. But they weren't nearly as strong as the ones outside and there was also the comfort of Nymphs around. And one good shout and an army of skilled fighters would come running, but Andrew had too much foolish pride to cry for help.

These were his thoughts as he returned back into camp, he may have skipped schedules to go hunting, but the risk was worth the yield. Art was supposed to be something that the Apollo kids excelled in. Andrew could appreciate art, but he certainly wasn't a pro at creating it in physical form.

He walked into the mess hall, he didn't think he was going to be able to beat the lunch rush, but surely enough he did. He eyed the salad bar, but only briefly. Something about it looked off, he could only place it as hardcore for some reason. He ignored the odd thought, grabbing a goblet. "Freshly made pink lemonade, ice cold." He whispered into it. At that moment, he wished he had one of those small paper umbrellas.

He took a seat at his cabin's table, it looked like he wasn't going to be alone for the moment. He took a glance at the girl, it was one of his sisters but he just couldn't remember the name. He kicked himself for not remembering, he was certain it started with an "n" and was short. "Hey. Having fun?" He remarked in a joking manner.

More people in, more people out. Was all the same to Nelly because she hardly knew most of the people in here anyway. The lunch rush would surely bring her her friends and Apollo siblings, and then she'd have people to talk to and maybe someone to persuade her to eat one of those strange salads. Why did she think they were hardcore? Did the Demeter kids hack apart some lettuce monsters they had accidentally summoned? For some reason that seemed almost... normal. Nelly sure was gonna have a helluva time trying to adjust to the real world again.

Ah, yes, she could just imagine it now: 'Oh hey, Nelly, did you see they found Nessie?'

And her reply: 'Oh, no, that's just Poseidon's pet sea monster. Got loose again.'

Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a familiar face -- whose name she couldn't recall, hilariously enough -- made his way to the Apollo table, armed with a goblet with what seemed like a red or pink liquid sloshing around inside. Interesting. She had so many siblings that she hardly knew who most of them were. She truly was getting too old for this place, wasn't she? Eighteen years old and ready to leave in a couple of months. Nelly hoped that Will and the other older kids could handle themselves; after all, they were one of the largest cabins thanks to Dad and his... charm. If she could call it that. Her Olympus visit with him several years ago hadn't really given her the impression of the suave musician-poet so many old Greek myths had claimed he was, but that was probably because she was his daughter and why shouldn't he make dad jokes instead of just trying to impress her with some other, more elegant way?

As the boy say down near her, she took a sip from her goblet and half-winced at how carbon-y (was that it?) it tasted at first, slightly burning the back of her throat as it went down. Maybe she should have asked for it cold. Maybe she'd been dehydrated, though. The boy was talking to her now as she recovered from the initial effects, almost teasingly: "Hey. Having fun?"

"Oh yeah," she replied, clearing her throat. "Definitely. Almost choked on soda. Dunno what to eat: Buncha kids blubbering in the infirmary 'cause they went too hard practicing with swords -- nasty stuff." The memory had since stopped really making her shudder since her mind had wandered elsewhere, but he didn't know that. "Don't think I'm all that hungry anymore just thinking of it, but whatever. And how 'bout you... whatsyourname?" Nelly sighed and rubbed her forehead with her fingertips, almost annoyed at herself right now. Jesus on toast. What kind of sister was she, not remembering a brother's name? "Sorry. Names elude me. So many siblings, so little time. You okay?"

Andrew brought his goblet to his lips and felt sheer bliss pour down his throat. It was sour and it was sweet. It was perfection in a cup, and yet Andrew couldn't even begin to figure out what it was. Lemonade was lemons, right? Lemons and water and sugar. And obviously there weren't pink lemons, despite how much Andrew would love those. So, what exactly made lemonade into pink lemonade? Was it just strawberries or raspberries? But then it would be strawberry lemonade or raspberry lemonade, and neither accounted for the taste anyway. Maybe it was more sugar and pink food-coloring? But then why make it pink, what was the point? Orange lemonade would have been so much better looking anyway...

Suddenly, Andrew snapped back into reality from the blissful sip of pink lemonade that sent him on his tangent of thoughts. He had just sat across from his sister, and he placed his goblet down. He could always debate the philosophy of lemonade and its family later on. "Nothing screams 'attractive' like open wounds." Andrew joked, attempting to lighten the mood. He'd never really had to deal with open wounds or anything serious, even though he knew first aid. He was pretty sure no one knew that he was able to patch some wounds, and he was grateful for that. Him around all kinds of open wounds was just a catastrophe waiting to happen.

"Thank gods, I thought I was going to be the only one to forget your name." Andrew said, a sigh of relief in his voice. He normally wouldn't pay much mind to someone who he couldn't remember their name, but this was his sister after all. He naturally held a sense of regard for strangers, even if not so high, and his siblings he held a higher regard for automatically. "It's Andrew. I'm pretty sure your name was N-... Ness..... started with an 'N' maybe?" He guess, with a playful shrug.

"Ness? Well, that's pretty close -- lot closer than most people get, anyway. It's Nelly. Like that lady singer Nelly Furtado from a couple of years ago -- or the rapper. Whichever genre you prefer, I guess." Was the lady singer even still mainstream anymore? Nelly hadn't heard of anything about her in years, so maybe she just retired from the music biz and got into carpentry or something. What do people do when they retire, anyway? Play golf? Mock kids for not being able to pay off their student debt quickly enough? Complain about not getting their order fast enough at a restaurant? Give bad life and money tips? (She didn't think Furtado was quite that old when Nelly had first heard her music, though.)

But seriously. From what she'd seen, Nelly really didn't want to be an old person anytime soon. Too many wrinkles and back pain, so little fun, and Social Security from what she heard was going down the toilet as she sat there. Nelly was no economics expert, though, she just left that to the Athena kids to overthink.

"But yeah. Hi there, Andrew. Haven't really talked to you any, have I? Don't remember doing that, but then again I spend all my time healing in the infirmary. Sorta get a bit flighty 'cause of that -- running around trying to get people medicine to shut them up or bandages to keep them from bleedin' out." 'cause, you know, what else was there for her to do? They literally needed her there at this point. There were so many new campers coming in and so many getting old and leaving or the kids went home for the school year that it was hard for her to figure out who was who, who needed training in all the wonders of patching up people or giving them medicine, who should be left alone because they were a million times better with a guitar than a needle and thread.... Ugh. Her memory was not that amazing, although for some reason she had developed this strange knack for identifying people by their scars if she had been in the infirmary at the time they were there getting patched up for it. (Maybe that was a sign she spent too much time there. Gods, she should really get some friends.)

Nelly took a sip of her warm Mountain Dew, noting to herself that the pink liquid in her brother's cup appeared to be something like... not Kool-aid, no. Juice -- fruit punch? Or maybe pink lemonade. Which was weird when she thought about it, 'cause why would they make lemonade pink? Did it look too much like piss for some nincompoop to handle so they put in some food dye or added cherry or strawberry juice to it? The world was a strange place.

"There was a Nelly on The Walking Dead." Andrew replied, thinking of the old thoughts of constant T.V. Those were fun times. "She was pretty cool too. Throwing people off of her, taking crap from no man nor woman." Andrew commented. He wondered why he hadn't gone riding at all lately; though he supposed a horse and a pegasus were quite different. Adding wings onto a horse really increased the danger factor, especially when it came to someone with a knack for either being loved or hated. That was a fifty-fifty chance of staying mounted for the duration of a flight. Andrew shuddered at the thought. He wondered if there was a Nervous Nelly down at the stables. Furthermore, would Nelly approve of Nervous Nelly?

"Infirmary duty." Andrew repeated, imagining what that must be like. Was it hectic, he wondered? Or was it easy-going, but just abundant in patients? Or maybe there was a whole system of who was in command, and Nelly was practically like the Doctor House of Half-Blood Hospital, where she would constantly diagnose Lupus. Andrew amused himself with that thought, he took a sip of the pink bliss in his cup as he expanded upon it. He wondered how that would play out, a hospital of demigod doctors. Then again, he supposed it wasn't hard to diagnose an open wound. "Is it ever anything like House?" Andrew joked, finally releasing his thoughts just a little.

"It sounds like an attractive job, really." The demigod said, joking with his sister. "You get to deal with all of the gooey and bloody cuts and scars. Let me ask you, have you ever lied to someone about the seriousness of their wounds? Just to see how they'd react?" He could see it now. Telling someone they had twenty minutes to live. It was cruel, in a sense, but in theory, you're saving them afterwards anyway. The least they can do is let you have some fun with it.

[OOC: I am also sorry for my delayed timing! However, we both got to it at least!]

'The Walking Dead?' Nelly just had the slightest inkling that it was about zombies, but she didn't know why. Maybe some kids at the infirmary had talked about it at some point, or she'd unconsciously picked up on a conversation about it in the mess hall or cabin. People were more into 'Game of Thrones' or whatever nowadays... but would it be blasphemous for her to say that she didn't care for it? Like, seriously. As far as she knew it was about 'white people fighting over one throne,' which was basically the entire history of Europe but with more dragons and magic and she really, really wasn't interested in all of that. She was more of a 'Law and Order' or dramatic medical show type of gal.

"Like the TV show? Yeah, sometimes. The clinic scenes where people are just acting really stupid sums up most of my time there -- like the lady using her inhaler like perfume? Classic." Very sad to see in person, but since all the kids were teens and away from home and scared half to death most of the time she couldn't blame them for acting unreasonable. When people at camp got hurt, it was usually pretty damned bad.

Nelly took another sip of her soda, noting to herself that it didn't taste flat in the least despite being out in the open for the past... oh, she didn't know, fifteen minutes or so? The world was amazing. Bless the food gods or whoever made these magical goblets. Maybe the Hecate kids with the help of the Hephaestus ones? The designs looked sorta ancient so it couldn't have been within the past one hundred years, which in retrospect was... sort of nasty, that people may have been drinking from the same goblets for at least a century now. Hopefully the cleaning harpies washed them well every night. "Wouldn't joke around like that, honestly -- and even if I'd wanted to, Chiron almost flipped a table when one of the other healers did that. It was, like, four years ago or somethin', very traumatizing -- the kid had gotten a nasty concussion and broke his leg, started bawling and then Chiron wandered in to talk to someone. And lemme tell you now, having a half-horse man flipping out on you is definitely scarier than any hellhound or Cyclops I've ever had to face."

Andrew had a nice time thinking to himself about old memories watching crummy dramas. That was his dad's usual acting job, crummy dramas, though occasionally he'd hit gold in his jobs. Andrew remembered House in particular. Yes sir, that is how he would like to act if he was a doctor with a bum leg. He couldn't help but imagine a girl using her inhaler like perfume. He'd seen stranger, but not in actual human beings. He wondered what else she'd seen in the infirmary. Maybe there was someone attempting to get drunk off of rubbing alcohol. Now that would be a fun way to go.

"Guess that's why I don't ever want to work in the medical field." Andrew replied, a dumb smile on his face. He took another sip of pink lemonade and enjoyed the pure bliss while he imagined the hi-jinx of being a doctor. "Though, I can guarantee you that if I ever am, I'll find a way to make it fun." He promised, giving his sister a nod. "I wouldn't want to face Chiron ever either. That guy is one hell of a beast." He said, and quite literally meant it. That man had been alive for how many years now?

Too many to count.

[ooc: annddd another color change back to cyan for nelly yay]

Nelly nodded sagely, tapping her finger against her cup as she held it poised to take another drink. It was sorta nice talking to Andrew about this medical stuff, even though he was sort of asking the typical questions about it all: 'Weird pranks you've pulled on patients?' '[Insert question comparing job to House or Scrubs]?' There were probably a few others, but she didn't want to think about them right now; she took it all in stride but it was usually weird to think about how people always had these weird tendencies to think alike. Maybe she could blame the media. Thanks, Obama.

"A literal beast, yeah. I sort of forget he's a centaur sometimes 'cause he's just so wise and all that jazz -- but then I see his tail flicking at flies buzzing around his behind and then I'm like 'oh.' You ever see the Party Ponies running around? They're probably worse than him." With their weird weapons with the boxing gloves and paintball guns and whatever, Nelly didn't know how they'd survived thousands of years. Maybe they just trampled all their enemies? It sounded logical, but knowing all the mythical creatures around they probably had some funky powers tucked away deep in their party-addled minds.
