Danger Close

If it was Robert's choice, he would wear kevlar and use a gun instead of a bow or a melee weapon. That made the most sense in a world full of monsters; the world had advanced, and with it so had war, so why didn't demigods take advantage of that? Robert was pretty sure he could coat bullets with celestial bronze and still be able to make them fire with the same accuracy. With that being said, the last thing Robert wanted to do was to get involved in the illegal firearms trade outside of camp, even if it was for legitimate protection. Not to mention if he got caught with it in camp; he'd be kicked out of the one safe haven he knew about.

The armor he did have on wasn't as light as he'd like it; leather straps connected celestial bronze plates on him. His dirty blonde hair was tamed by a helmet, that looked like it probably wouldn't pass an armor inspection. He scanned through the weapons on the racks, there were so many that it baffled him. He recognized very many of them from AP Military History and some books. He had a general idea how many of them worked, but that idea hadn't formed into a good grasp. Robert was a lot better with safety pads and a hockey stick.

There were many Greek swords, but less of other types, like Japanese and Roman blades, which were arguably more effective. Eventually Robert decided on a saber-like tool, the makhaira. Now all he had to do was spar with someone and hoped that Athena had given him some combat genes. He suspected that that wouldn't be the case.

It was a well known fact that Paisley spent a good amount of time at the arenas. Even more than she spent partying, which some people had a hard time believing. Despite her well done hair and designer clothes, Paisley didn't mind getting dirty. In fact, it was kind of necessary. Clothes could be replaced, there was no doubt in that. But she only had one life, and she was determined not to lose it because she wasn't prepared to fight.

She walked into the arenas with her xiphos strapped to her side and armor over her everyday clothes. Armor, she might add, that had required a lot of work and flirting to acquire. But it was completely worth it. Her usual sparring partners were absent, and she wasn't keen on using a dummy, as they don't actually move or fight back. That was when another person caught her eye. She hadn't seen him here before, not that she spends all of her hours training. Still, what time she did spend here usually gave her a good idea of who the regulars were.

"Need a partner?" She asked with a smile that looked like she was attempting to be nice, but ultimately failing. She pulled her sword out of it's sheath, the blade glinting in the sun. She sized the boy up a bit, trying to figure out how much of a fight he'd put up.

The sudden question appeared from a girl, one who wasn't in particular tall. That feature, surprisingly, wasn't the most abundant thing Robert noticed. Beyond her gear, and even her height, he also noticed her eyebrows. The looked very well groomed, and although they didn't look in particularly angry, especially while she was smiling, he imagined it made for a good expression to have if she was ever furious at someone. "Yes." Robert replied, simply. He didn't want to provide information that he was a rookie, as that wasn't exactly the best information to supply to a stranger. Especially one with a sword.

He took note of her armor, and became painfully aware that she was not a rookie like he was. It was possible the armor was vanity, but if she was only looking to impress with looks, she wouldn't have asked someone to fight her. Despite the height, Robert began to feel like he was probably going to have a bad time. He held back a random fact he was juggling about how two of the same exact swords had different names based on their curve, but decided now wasn't a good time. He drew his sword, and assumed combat position.

Very stiffly, anyway.

Paisley's smile turned even meaner (if such a thing were even possible), although if you were to ask her that's just her game face. The second he stood at the ready, she kicked her foot out and caught the boy's ankle. She swept her leg around, pulling his ankle with her while attempting to hit him in the chest with the butt of her sword. It was more of a shove, nothing too hard since she didn't want to break any bones. His armor seemed shoddy enough, maybe something crafted by a newer blacksmith. She pulled her leg away, stepping back and bringing her sword quickly back to ready position in case he tried anything.

In her experience, shoddy armor was a necessity for new kids. The bright side is, if you can learn to fight well in bulky armor, changing to nicer armor requires less of an adjustment. Besides, it built muscle. It was also kind of funny to watch the new kids with the wrong sized armor and the dinky swords. They reminded her of when she used to raid her mothers closet when she was six.

Robert applied what he knew about sword fighting, and immediately kept his eyes on her sword, which was a brutal mistake. For someone who was used to balancing on ice skates while battling with sticks for a rubber puck, Robert did not react well to the sudden leg movements. The bash against his chest didn't feel pleasant, and he was beginning to wonder what mindless idiot made this armor. He put his focus into catching himself before he hit the ground, so that at least he had some dignity left. He was hopeful that sword fighting here wasn't the most important thing, as his transparent was something important to him. He didn't want any label, much less the one who can't use a sword right.

He stood back up, after basically fumbling to the ground. "I'm assuming we'll just call that one a point to you." Robert said. What else was he supposed to say in a situation? He had to practice to get any grasp on the subject, and being embarrassed and beaten was a lot less worse than dying. He resisted the urge to keep his legs back; you were supposed to keep them straight and strong, and ready to move under any circumstances. "What's your name?" Robert asked. It was easy to get a general idea of her from looking at her, but looking at her, she looked small.

Feeling her attack, you'd imagine she's at least twice her size. Maybe she was a child of Ares.

Paisley watched as he fell to the ground, his armor making a clattering noise as it hit the concrete. All in all it wasn't much of a fight, more of a technique demonstration. It also wasn't something people fell for, usually because they know to be light on their feet, instead of trying to stand like an unmovable statue. Paisley put her sword away as he stood up, crossing her arms.

"Paisley." She said simply, deciding to omit the rest of her name. Despite her small stature she still stood proudly. Besides, slouching would make her look even shorter. She didn't need that.

"Don't stand like that it's what makes you fall harder." She commented, "Haven't you been paying attention during training?" That was like lesson number one. Know how to stand. She remembered when she was first learning. Although her issue wasn't standing, it was her trying to hold her ground too much. She was too small and would be easily overpowered. Her strength comes from moving. It also comes from falling down, making mistakes, and then learning. But she wasn't much of a teacher. She was more of, 'dude this is what you're doing wrong, learn how to fix it yourself.' People have told her it's 'unhelpful criticism.' but she doesn't really care.

"You wanna try again or what?"

Paisley. That was definitely Scottish. She didn't look Scottish at all, but she definitely fought like she had the blood of every Loch and Gordon in her veins. His chest still hurt a decent bit, but he was used to relatively blunt injuries commonly. "That's fencing... right?" Robert asked, and while he held certainty in his words, it sure didn't sound like it. Everyone had an intensely different style of blades and combat, and the Greeks were no exception. Fencing was European, so Robert wasn't so sure if that constituted as a close enough style of movement, not to mention, a style that Robert had never practiced. He sighed; it was just going to be one long and painful series of trial and error.

"Yes. That one was too quick." Robert said, assuming position again. Okay, strong stance and quick feet. Robert almost felt tempted to go on the offense, at least if he struck first he would have done something in the fight. Still, he was painfully aware that if Paisley even had an ounce of defensive skill, it would come back to haunt him. The only way to hold some ground was to play defense, like having the other team pull an empty-netter. Only, Robert wasn't up by a point, he was down by one.

He awaited her offense, wondering how it was possible for such a small girl to deliver such a massive punch.
